A British family may have to exhume their father’s body after he was buried in the wrong grave.
Gary Hawken died aged 51 following a heart attack in September, and he was buried in a local cemetery in St Dennis, Cornwall.
Now, his devastated family have been told he was buried in the wrong plot and he may have to be moved, reported Mirror Online.
Heartbroken wife Linda and daughters Lindsey, Natasha and Jessica are waiting to hear if the the coffin will be dug up and moved.
“It is absolutely horrific. My mother is absolutely traumatised by it – she can’t eat or sleep,” said Lindsey.
The local council have admitted responsibility for the blunder and are working through the issue.
Parish council chairman Julia Clark said the issue had now been passed to their legal team and they were hoping to prevent having to move the coffin.
“To say we apologise for this and for the way it has been handled just isn’t enough,” she said.
“I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy and an apology is just tiny words.”
Hawken’s brother Paul, 58, described the situation as “beyond belief” and added: “Things like this just don’t happen in real life.”
“It’s like they are talking about a cat or dog we’ve buried at the bottom of the garden, but it isn’t,” he said.
